The sequel to a “highly underrated” Netflix film has left fans divided over whether it measures up to the original. The first film, The Platform, released in 2019, takes place in a multi-level prison where a food platform descends from the top floor.
Those on higher levels, representing the privileged elite in a capitalist society, feast on gourmet meals, while those on the lower levels face starvation and despair. The film gained a significant following on Netflix and earned an 80% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, leading to the release of a sequel that continues to explore similar themes. However, fan reactions to the follow-up have been mixed.
One fan, praising the original, wrote: “If you loved Parasite, please watch The Platform. It’s a must-see for fans of Bong Joon Ho, capitalism critiques, horror lovers, or anyone looking for something unique to watch.”
The sequel has sparked debate. Some fans were enthusiastic, with one commenting, “I thought it was epic! 8.5/10! As a fan of the first one, I’d recommend watching it in the original Spanish with subtitles. Dubbed versions ruin it for me. I thoroughly enjoyed this one.” Others offered more measured responses, like: “It’s a solid psychological thriller. It lived up to my expectations—dark and disturbing, just like the first.”
Not everyone was impressed, though. One disappointed viewer noted, “I liked it at first, but as the movie went on, it got confusing. Then I realized it was a prequel. It felt like they were trying to cram in too many ideas, and it ended up being a letdown.”
