The Southwest Security Network Agency, known as the Amotekun Corps, has successfully foiled five k!dnapping attempts in the past week, according to Ondo State Commander Akogun Adetunji Adeleye. He made this announcement while presenting 20 suspects arrested for various crimes at the Corps’ headquarters in Alagbaka, Akure, on Thursday. Among the suspects was a family of robbers, including a husband, wife, and their children.
Adeleye explained that Amotekun operatives have been intensifying patrols in forests across the state, particularly in high-risk areas, to deter k!dnappers. In addition to preventing the abductions, the Corps also rescued nine victims during this period. He highlighted successful raids in the notorious Elegbeka area, known for criminal activities, and assured the public that the Corps has thoroughly infiltrated the area’s forests to protect lives and property.
“In the coming weeks, we aim to dominate the Ala, Ago Oyinbo, Ogbese, Jugbere, and Ifon forests,” Adeleye said, expressing confidence that these proactive measures would bring relief to communities plagued by insecurity.
He also revealed the arrest of a 28-year-old k!dnapping suspect, Usman Abubakar, in Igbo Oba-Owo during one of the operations. Abubakar is currently in custody for interrogation.
The Amotekun Commander emphasized the Corps’ ongoing commitment to enhancing security in the state and urged residents to support their efforts by providing timely information. He noted that three minors from the robber family, aged between 12 and 15, were involved in burglary but would not be publicly paraded due to legal restrictions. A total of 15 suspects were presented during the week, with no arrests related to violations of the law.
Adeleye reported that there were no incidents related to land or chieftaincy disputes, and that Ondo State has remained peaceful regarding labor unions, anti-grazing laws, and conflicts between farmers and herders. One suspect was paraded in connection to these issues, while no human trafficking cases were reported. A kidnapping suspect, who admitted to collecting two million naira in ransom, also provided details on the distribution of the money.
The overall security situation in Ondo State remains stable, with no significant issues in political, religious, or militant activities. However, Adeleye noted three arrests related to cultism, involving possession of charms, arms, and ammunition.
He urged citizens to exercise caution, particularly when purchasing second-hand goods, advising them to always obtain original, verifiable receipts to avoid unknowingly supporting criminal activity, especially as economic hardship has led to increased crime.
“We encourage everyone to remain vigilant and avoid falling victim to these criminals,” he warned.
