A UK football team was violently attacked with baseball bats after a match, leaving one player reportedly with ‘life-changing injur!es.’ The assault occurred following a game between Avenue Hotspur FC and Llanrumney Athletic, two local Division 1 Cardiff & District League teams, at Eastern Leisure Centre in Llanrumney, Cardiff, on Saturday afternoon (October 12).
After Avenue Hotspur FC lost 3-1, reports from The Mirror indicated that three red and two yellow cards were issued post-match. Details about the attack are limited, but it appears that Avenue Hotspur FC players were ambushed with various weapons as they left the changing rooms.
In a social media statement, the team described the attack as ‘distressing and frightening’ for everyone involved. They confirmed that their goalkeeper, Joel Collins, 32, suffered a ‘life-changing’ knee injury, which police stated would require months of recovery.
“We are thankful that Joel Collins is in good spirits and currently undergoing surgery to repair his knee,” the statement said. “This horrific attack on players is completely unacceptable and was a terrifying experience for all. We are cooperating with the police and the South Wales Football Association in their investigations, and our priority is supporting those affected.”
Llanrumney Athletic also condemned the violence, posting on social media: “After the game against Avenue Hotspurs, Llanrumney Athletic wishes anyone injured a quick recovery. Football should never leave anyone fearing for their ability to return to work due to an incident.
“We strongly condemn the actions of those involved. As far as we are aware, no players or staff from our club were part of this, but if any information arises suggesting otherwise, it will be addressed. We are fully cooperating with the investigation.”
Llanrumney Athletic also told the BBC that none of their players or coaching staff participated in the attack.
South Wales Police are investigating, confirming that several attackers were armed and masked. Detective Inspector Daniel Todd from South Wales Police described the violence as ‘appalling and unacceptable,’ saying, “This incident has understandably shocked the community and was likely terrifying for those involved. We appreciate the information provided so far and encourage any witnesses to come forward.”
