
An Anambra State High Court sitting in Ogidi, within the Idemili Judicial Division, and presided over by Justice Lauretta Oyeka, has sentenced Chidubem Anawonwa to d*@th by h@ng!ng after finding him gu!lty of the m*rder of his 74-year-old mother, Theresa Anawonwa.
The incident occurred on April 23, 2019, in Umuokokpa Aborji village, Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area. The offence was said to be in v!ol@tion of Section 271 of the Cr!m!nal Code, Cap. 36, Revised Laws of Anambra State (1991, as amended).

During the trial (Charge No. HID/7C/2020), the prosecution—led by Chief State Counsel Obiageli Nwankiti and Principal State Counsel Uju Igboeli—presented evidence showing a history of v!*lence by the conv!ct ag@!nst his mother, including repeated ab*se and thr£@ts.
It was gathered that on the day of the incident, while his young niece was locked inside a room, the accused, who was 37 years old at the time, ass@ult£d his mother and eventually str*ngl£d her to d*@th after infl!ct!ng multiple !njur!£z.
The court, relying on testimonies from five prosecution witnesses, dismissed the defendant’s claim of an alibi. Despite being represented on a pro bono basis, he was found guilty and sentenced accordingly.
