Hezbollah is both a Shiite Muslim political party and a militant group known for its anti-Israel stance, receiving funding from Iran, Israel’s main adversary. It has supported Hamas since the onset of the conflict between Israel and Palestine that began on October 7.

Hassan Nasrallah, who has not made a public appearance for years due to fears of assassination, has strong ties to Iran and has played a key role in militarizing Hezbollah, providing training to members of Hamas as well as militias in Yemen and Iraq.

Born in 1960 in Beirut, Nasrallah joined the Amal movement, a Shiite militia, during the Lebanese Civil War in 1975. He became the leader of Hezbollah in 1992 after the previous leader was killed in a helicopter strike. As of the time of this report, Hezbollah has not commented on Israel’s claim of Nasrallah’s assassination.
