A La Liga football fan has received a combined one-year prison sentence for racially abusing Super Eagles winger Samuel Chukwueze and Real Madrid star Vinicius Jnr in two separate incidents.
The individual directed hateful remarks at former Villarreal player Samuel Chukwueze during Mallorca’s home La Liga victory on February 18. Prior to that, he also targeted Brazilian winger Vinicius Jnr during Real Madrid’s match against Mallorca on February 5, 2023.
A Spanish court has imposed six-month prison sentences for each incident and has additionally enforced a three-year stadium ban on the supporter.
Vinicius recently expressed feeling “targeted” by discriminatory abuse from rival fans. He asserted that Spain should not be allowed to host the 2030 World Cup unless significant action is taken against discrimination.
La Liga president Javier Tebas quickly criticized this suggestion, calling it “incoherent.” He noted that while Vinicius claimed the World Cup should be reconsidered, he also stated that Spain is not a racist country.
Tebas emphasized, “Let’s focus on what is coherent: Spain is not a racist country, and I agree with Vinicius on that point.”
