Tim Alcock of LeaseCar has noted that while vehicle safety equipment requirements vary globally, many countries mandate drivers to carry specific items. For instance, Greece, Romania, and Croatia require a first aid kit in every vehicle. Similarly, Switzerland, Austria, and France mandate warning triangles in cars to alert other motorists of potential dangers. Safety equipment is already compulsory in various European nations.
Additionally, Alcock highlighted that reflective jackets are required for both drivers and passengers during breakdowns in countries such as Hungary, Estonia, and Spain. In several European nations, including Poland, Turkey, and Bulgaria, carrying a fire extinguisher in vehicles is mandatory, whereas in the UK, this requirement applies only to Public Service Vehicles and large trucks. He strongly believes that mandating safety kits and equipment in the UK could improve road safety, prompting a push for the government to make such equipment a legal requirement for vehicle travel.
The push for mandatory in-car safety equipment is supported by the fact that several European countries, especially in Eastern and Southern Europe, already have regulations requiring drivers to carry fire extinguishers in their vehicles as a safety measure.
