Drivers in England Warned That They Can No Longer Exceed the Speed Limit By ’10 Percent.’

Motorists have been alerted that the belief in a permissible ten percent speed limit buffer is incorrect. The notion that drivers could legally travel at 35mph in a 30mph zone due to the “10 percent plus 2mph rule” has been clarified as a myth. Andrew Jervis, CEO of ClickMechanic, has stated that speed limits are not random but are determined with careful consideration of road conditions, traffic, and pedestrian safety.

He points out that adhering to the mistaken belief of a ten percent margin could result in legal penalties and contribute to severe traffic accidents. Jervis underscores the collective obligation of all drivers to operate vehicles with care to maintain the safety of our roads for every user.

Mr. Jervis explained that the misconception about the ten percent speed buffer originated from the speed enforcement guidelines issued by the Association of Chief Police Officers. He stressed, “The ten percent guideline is meant for police use, not as a public standard.” He also pointed out that this guideline accounts for the potential inaccuracy of speed detection equipment. The typical penalty for speeding is a £100 fine and 3 penalty points added to the driver’s license.

Accumulating 12 or more penalty points on your driving license within a 3-year period can result in disqualification from driving. The government offers a service where you can check your driving license record and see any penalty points.
