“Doctor Explains 5 Concerning Symptoms That Could Suggest Colon Cancer”

A cancer specialist has pointed out five symptoms to watch for, as they could indicate colon cancer. The American Cancer Society projects around 106,590 new cases of colon cancer in 2024, with the disease being the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the U.S.

Oncologist Dr. Waqqas Tai shared on TikTok five warning signs to be aware of if you’re concerned about colon cancer.

Pencil Thin Stools:

If your stools are unusually narrow, thinner than a pen or pencil, this could be a concern. Dr. Tai explains that this may suggest a tumor compressing the colon, making stools appear thinner.

Blood in Stool:

Look for blood after bowel movements. Even if you suspect hemorrhoids—swollen veins that often cause bleeding—it’s important to see a doctor. Dr. Tai stresses that blood in the stool should never be ignored.

Low Blood Count:

Anemia, particularly in men, can be a warning sign. Dr. Tai explains, “Men should not be anemic for any healthy reason,” and women without heavy periods should also be cautious if they have low hemoglobin levels, as it could require a colonoscopy.

Fluctuating Bowel Habits:

Frequent shifts between severe diarrhea and constipation may point to colon issues. While these changes can also signal other gastrointestinal problems, Dr. Tai advises seeking medical advice if they appear alongside other symptoms.

Fevers, Sweating, and Weight Loss:

Unexplained weight loss, random fevers, and night sweats—known as ‘B symptoms’—are all signs that it’s time to consult a doctor.
