X, formerly known as Twitter, is facing backlash after altering its blocking feature, one of several changes since Elon Musk took over in 2022. Previously, blocking someone would prevent them from interacting with or viewing your posts. The new update, however, modifies this functionality.
Users have recently received notifications explaining the change: “If your posts are public, accounts you’ve blocked will still be able to view them but won’t be able to engage,” meaning blocked users can still see content but cannot comment, like, or share.
The X Engineering account clarified the update, stating: “The block feature can be used to conceal harmful or private information about blocked users. This update provides transparency by allowing users to see if this happens.”
Many users expressed frustration and confusion about the change. One person noted, “Blocking is to stop people from seeing or being seen—transparency is not the goal.” Another user commented, “Now blocked users can still view and screenshot posts. That’s not helpful.” A third remarked, “This defeats the purpose of blocking, which is to prevent stalkers from seeing my posts.”
Claire Waxman, London’s victims’ commissioner, called the decision dangerous, warning that it “caters to abusers” and could have serious safety implications for victims of stalking and harassment.
