“My boyfriend and I aren’t sure what to make of this,” she wrote.

“We visited a state park in West Virginia during the off-season. According to the park ranger and the condition of the hiking trails, we were the only ones there that week and the first visitors in quite some time. I took this photo at the top of the mountain. Behind the pillar, there should have been nothing but a steep drop into the woods below. Are we just seeing things?”

Springfield shared two photos: one of the mountain area and a zoomed-in shot of a particular spot in the picture.

“That really looks like a hand,” she remarked.

The close-up shot is unsettling, revealing what looks like a hand gripping the pillar.

One person commented, “It could be fungus, but yeah, that really looks like a hand.” Another said, “This might be the first genuinely terrifying thing I’ve seen on here.” A third added, “If you look at the shadow on the ground, it appears someone’s back is visible, which matches the sun’s position.”

A fourth person warned, “Don’t go back after dark.”

Springfield later told Newsweek, “I enjoy film photography, and my boyfriend and I were working on a scrapbook of all the developed photos I took. I just happened to notice it—I’m not sure how, since it’s such a small detail. We both agreed it was strange and thought it looked like a hand.”

“We were honestly pretty excited when we saw it, especially with all the cryptid stories about the West Virginian mountains. Even if it’s not really a hand, it’s a fun story to share.” Cryptids are mythical creatures that some believe exist, and West Virginia is known for legends like Bigfoot, rumored to inhabit the area. Springfield joked, “We were basically in the Appalachians, so maybe it’s Bigfoot!” Another commenter quipped, “Looks like you’ve captured a photo of Bigfoot’s lesser-known cousin, Littlehand.”
