In a surprising move, Delta Air Lines has issued guidelines instructing aspiring flight attendants to wear undergarments if selected for the role, leaving many to wonder what led to this directive.
Recently, the major U.S. airline released a detailed two-page memo outlining a strict dress code for its flight attendants, covering even the smallest aspects of their appearance.
The document, titled “Delta Air Lines Flight Attendant Hiring Appearance Requirements Acknowledgement,” stresses that while employees should be passionate about customer service, they must also maintain a polished and professional appearance. Personal hygiene is a key focus, with the memo stating that facial hair should be neatly trimmed, and perfume or aftershave should be applied lightly. Additionally, eyelashes should not be “extreme” in length or volume.
Personal expression is limited under the guidelines. Tattoos must be covered by clothing, which can be tricky for those with tattoos on their hands, neck, or face. Nail polish is restricted to non-neon shades, and nails must be uniform in color, neat, and trimmed. If polished, nails should be free of chips.
Perhaps the most striking part of the memo is its clothing requirements. It explicitly states, “Proper undergarments must be worn but must not be visible. Clothing must be professional and fit properly. Dresses and skirts should be at or below knee length.”
The memo also adds, “Shoes should be closed-toe flats, heels, or sling-backs. Athletic shoes are not permitted. A tie is required with button-collared dress shirts for those opting for the male uniform.”
Though these rules may seem stringent, they align with Delta’s reputation for professionalism. A company spokesperson told the Daily Mail, “In the interest of transparency and clarity for all prospective candidates, we are encouraging people to ‘dress for success’ and make a great first impression as they aspire to join the flight attendant ranks.” Delta Air Lines continues to generate more revenue than any other airline worldwide, reflecting the company’s dedication to high standards.
