Eva Longoria is not only an acclaimed actress, devoted mother, and philanthropist with a foundation supporting Latina empowerment, but she’s also credited with a pivotal role in keeping the John Wick franchise alive.
A decade ago, the debut of Keanu Reeves’ neo-noir action series almost didn’t happen, as producer Basil Iwanyk struggled to secure a theatrical distributor. Despite these early challenges, the movie went on to exceed expectations, grossing $86 million globally.
Since then, three sequels have been released, with a spin-off, Ballerina, expected next year featuring Ana de Armas as Eve Macarro.
According to an interview with Business Insider, directors Chad Stahelski and David Leitch revealed that during production on the first John Wick, they faced a significant budget gap with less than a week until completion. Iwanyk, maxed out on credit cards, turned to the Creative Artists Agency (CAA), which sought investors among actors.
Longoria, recognized for roles in The Young and the Restless and Overboard, stepped up to fill the funding shortfall just before the project was abandoned. Her crucial involvement remained largely unknown until John Wick became a success, when Stahelski shared that Iwanyk revealed her role with a laugh at a dinner: “Funny story, you know who gap financed you? Eva Longoria.”
The team later took her out to thank her for her essential support. While fans are only now discovering her role in the franchise’s success, many are reacting on social media with admiration, with one calling her a “real-life superhero” and others expressing hope she was well compensated.
Longoria’s behind-the-scenes work is extensive, with several executive producer credits, including 2022’s Unplugging, where she also starred. Additionally, she has directed films such as Flamin’ Hot and The Civil War: Chavez vs. de la Hoya, and produced the upcoming Spanish-language series, Call My Agent!.
