Progress is being made on The Line, a Saudi Arabian city designed to accommodate nine million people. Located in NEOM, an urban area currently under construction in Tabuk Province, the city will operate on 100% renewable energy. First unveiled several years ago, The Line is slated for completion by 2030.
According to a press release from 2022, the city will be 200 meters wide, stretch 170 kilometers, and rise 500 meters above sea level, ultimately housing nine million residents within a 34-square-kilometer area—an unprecedented population density for cities of similar size.
In a recent development, a concrete factory costing $186 million (700 million Saudi Riyals) is set to be built to support the construction of The Line. Saudi Arabia is partnering with construction company Asas Al-Mohileb to establish this ready-mix concrete facility.
The factory is expected to produce more than 20,000 cubic meters of ready-mix green concrete each day. NEOM CEO Nadhmi Al-Nasr noted that the establishment of these concrete plants represents significant progress at NEOM. He emphasized the Kingdom’s strong construction industry and the importance of local partnerships in executing this transformative project efficiently and sustainably. Al-Nasr mentioned NEOM’s ambition to become a hub for local industry leaders and entrepreneurs, in line with Saudi Vision 2030.
A press release from earlier this month reported that construction on The Line is advancing, with nearly 1,000 out of the planned 30,000 piles already installed. Although the project’s completion is still years away, NEOM’s first destination, the island of Sindalah, is expected to open soon.
Sindalah will offer unique experiences both on and beneath the water, covering 840,000 square meters and featuring world-class luxury. This $1.2 billion project is anticipated to open between October 25 and 27, 2024.
