Jigawa Man Sets Grandmother on F!re, Because She Made Him Angry

The Jigawa State Police Command has arrested a 26-year-old man, Nura Mas’ud, for setting his 60-year-old grandmother, Zuwaira Muhammad, on f!re in the Sule Tankarkar Local Government Area of the state.

According to the spokesperson of the command, DSP Lawan Shiisu Adam, in a statement dated Saturday, October 12, 2024, the suspect went to his family home with a petrol canister, doused his grandmother with it, and set her on f!re.

The woman later died while receiving medical treatment at a hospital.

The police spokesperson stated that the suspect suffers from m*ntal illness and has been under treatment at a Psychiatric Hospital.

During questioning, the suspect confessed to his actions, claiming that his grandmother upset him by commenting on his physical appearance and health.

“On 08/10/2024 at around 1600hrs, the Command was informed of a trag!c incident in Mu’azu village, Dan Gwanki ward, Sule Tankarkar LGA,” the statement read.

“Nura Mas’ud, aged 26, from Mu’azu village in Sule Tankarkar LGA, went to his family home with a petrol canister and poured it on his grandmother, Zuwaira Muhammad, aged 60, setting her on f!re.

“The elderly woman succumbed to her injur!es while receiving treatment. A medical doctor confirmed her death, and her remains were released to her family for burial in accordance with Islamic rites.

“A team of police detectives from Sule Tankarkar division promptly arrested the suspect and held him in custody. He was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation.

“During interrogation, the suspect admitted to the offense.

“A preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect has a history of mental illness and has been receiving treatment at Kazaure Psychiatric Hospital.

“The suspect further stated that his grandmother upset him by expressing concerns about his physical appearance and health, which annoyed him. Despite his warnings, she continued, prompting him to buy gasoline, pour it on her, and set her on f!re.

“The Jigawa State Commissioner of Police, CP AT Abdullahi psc, has instructed the State Criminal Investigation Department, Dutse, to conduct a thorough investigation and vigorously prosecute the perpetrator to prevent such incidents in the future.”
