Xabi Alonso is rumored to have a strategic vision aimed at managing top European clubs. Currently at Bayer Leverkusen, the 42-year-old is regarded as one of the most promising talents in European football.
Alonso has emerged as a top contender for the Liverpool managerial role following Jurgen Klopp’s anticipated departure in the summer. Additionally, the Spaniard has been previously linked with managerial positions at Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.
However, reports suggest that Alonso may have a covert plan in motion. Spanish journalist Guillem Balagué disclosed that Alonso informed his agent of a contingency plan to return to Real Sociedad if other opportunities didn’t materialize as desired.
As a retired midfielder, Alonso transitioned into coaching at the LaLiga club, overseeing the B team from 2019 to 2022. Despite his past ties to Spain, it seems improbable that Alonso will make a return, especially considering his current club’s contention for the Bundesliga title.
Balagué has emphasized that Alonso is setting his sights on a significant managerial position for when he eventually departs Bayer Leverkusen. Furthermore, there’s speculation that Manchester City might consider Alonso as a potential successor to Pep Guardiola.
During an appearance on the BBC’s The Football News Show, Alonso revealed a hidden plan, stating, “I’ll tell you a little secret. When he went to Bayer Leverkusen, he told his agent ‘do you know what, I am thinking that if it doesn’t go well at Bayer Leverkusen, I’ll go back to Real Sociedad. But if it goes well, from here, it’s Liverpool, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich. Let me add Manchester City to the equation and that’s where Xabi Alonso could go next. When, is a different matter.”
In the midst of this speculation, Barcelona has also emerged as a potential destination for Alonso. With current manager Xavi Hernandez set to step down at the end of the season, Barcelona’s interest adds to the intrigue surrounding Alonso’s future.
Alonso’s contract at Bayer Leverkusen extends until 2025, providing him with ample time to weigh his options. Notably, both Pep Guardiola’s contract at Manchester City and Carlo Ancelotti’s at Real Madrid expire in that same year.
However, Liverpool’s pursuit of a long-term successor to Klopp this summer might accelerate Alonso’s decision-making process rather than waiting another year.
