Woman Receives One-Year Pr!son Sentence for To*turing Her Young Stepchildren in Adamawa

The Chief Magistrate Court II in Yola, Adamawa State, has sentenced 37-year-old housewife Fatima Abubakar to one year in prison for child abuse, with no option for a fine.

Fatima, a resident of Sanda Makama B Ward in Yola South Local Government Area, was arrested on October 5, 2024, for abusing her stepchildren, 3-year-old Usman Abubakar and 2-year-old Hafsat Abubakar. She and her husband, Abubakar Yuguda, the children’s father, were charged by police officer SP Iliya Akawu for child abvse under sections 60 and 209 of the Adamawa State Penal Code Law.

Presiding Magistrate M. A. Adamu found Fatima guilty of crvelty and sentenced her to prison. In addition to her sentence, she was ordered to pay N100,000 to the government and N150,000 for the medical treatment of the abvsed children.

Fatima confessed to t*rturing the two children, who had been left in her care. Her husband, initially charged alongside her, was granted bail, which he met. His case has been adjourned for further hearings.
