Victor Boniface Tips Himself Over Ademola Lookman for African Player of the Year Award
Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface has backed himself to win the African Player of the Year award, placing himself ahead of his compatriot, Ademola Lookman.
Playing for Bayer Leverkusen, Boniface had a stellar debut season, netting 21 goals and providing 10 assists across all competitions. His contributions helped Leverkusen secure both the Bundesliga title and the DFB Pokal, although they fell short in the UEFA Europa League final, where Lookman’s hat-trick guided Atalanta to victory.
Boniface’s exceptional performance last season earned him a spot on the Ballon d’Or nomination list, alongside Lookman, who is considered a favorite by bookmakers.
Continuing his impressive form this season, Boniface has already registered 5 goal involvements (4 goals and 1 assist) in six matches, and he believes his contributions deserve recognition.
“Probably between me and Lookman. I will go for myself as the African Footballer of the Year; I rate myself that high,” he told SportyTV. “If we’re just considering what we did last season, I’ll pick myself.”
Boniface also commented on Victor Osimhen’s summer transfer situation, which saw two failed bids from Chelsea and a Saudi Arabian club before Osimhen chose to join Galatasaray on loan.
“There were three different parties involved – Napoli, Chelsea, and Victor Osimhen. Osimhen’s mentality is strong. I know he really wants to come to the Premier League,” Boniface said. “I know that for sure because we spoke one time, but whatever happened, I don’t know. He knows I always wish him the best.”
