An Italian woman has trag!cally died after being struck by a swordfish during a freak surfing accident in Indonesia. Giulia Manfrini, a surf coach and co-founder of AWAVE surf travel agency, was surfing near Ombak Bengbeng off Masokut Island with her friends Alexandre Ribas and Massimo Ferro when the incident occurred last week.
A swordfish unexpectedly appeared in front of her, its characteristic long bill resembling a sword. Known for their strength and speed, reaching up to 60mph, the swordfish’s agility likely contributed to the fatal accident, impaling Giulia as it came towards her.
As reported by Australia’s ABC News, Lahmudin Siregar from the Mentawai Islands’ D!saster Management Agency stated that the swordfish unexpectedly leaped and pierced her chest. Despite Ribas and Ferro’s efforts to administer first aid and rush her to Pei Pei Pasakiat Taileleu Health Center, Giulia’s injuries were fatal. Medical reports noted a 5cm deep chest wound and signs of drowning.
Her colleagues, friends, and loved ones have been mourning her loss. James Colston, co-founder of AWAVE Travel, highlighted her impact on the surf community both in Europe and globally, remembering her kindness and positivity. Venaria Reale’s mayor, Fabio Giulivi, also paid tribute on Facebook, expressing the community’s shock and offering condolences to her family.
Giulia, 36, was from Venaria and pursued her dream of surfing and establishing a sports holiday travel agency. After her initial hospital visit, her body has been transported to Padang City before it returns to Italy.
