Photos from the Burial of Taiwo Akinkunmi, the Designer of the Nigerian Flag.

The family of Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi, the late designer of Nigeria’s national flag, has laid him to rest a year after his passing.

Akinkunmi, who passed away on August 29, 2023, at the age of 87, had been promised a state burial by the federal government, but after the promise was not fulfilled, his family decided to move forward with the burial, with support from the Oyo State Government.

The funeral service, organized by Oyo State, was held at the Obafemi Awolowo Stadium in Ibadan, attracting a large gathering of mourners, including family members, friends, and government officials. Ministers from the Gospel Faith Mission International conducted the service.

During the ceremony, Oyo State Acting Governor Bayo Lawal honored Akinkunmi as a symbol of pride for the state, the nation, and the world. He noted that Nigeria’s national flag, designed by Akinkunmi, is flown in all Nigerian embassies globally, representing an enduring legacy of unity for the country.

Lawal highlighted the significance of the flag’s colors, explaining that green symbolizes Nigeria’s agriculture and natural resources, while white represents peace and tranquility. He emphasized the need for peace among Nigeria’s diverse tribes to ensure national progress and development.

He also urged the Federal Government to properly recognize and immortalize Akinkunmi’s legacy, calling for greater involvement in honoring the late designer beyond the efforts of his family and the Oyo State Government.

Mr. Akinwumi, the son of the deceased, expressed gratitude to the Oyo State Government for its support in arranging his father’s burial.
