Mikel Arteta Receives a ‘Highly Selective and Rare’ Award that Pep Guardiola has Never Won.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has been honored with a ‘rare’ award that Pep Guardiola has never received. Since becoming Arsenal’s manager in December 2019, Arteta has transformed a previously underperforming team into consistent Premier League title contenders. The Gunners led the table for much of last season before ultimately falling short, but this year they approach the final day with a chance to prevent Manchester City from securing a fourth consecutive title.

At the Emirates Stadium, Arteta has established a style that has made Arsenal one of the most exciting teams to watch in Europe.

In recognition of his achievements and past contributions to football, Arteta was awarded the Officer’s Cross of The Royal Order of Isabella the Catholic on Wednesday. This Spanish civil order of chivalry honors individuals who have rendered exceptional services to Spain or promoted international relations and cooperation with other nations.

The highly selective and rare accolade, established in 1815, is awarded by the King of Spain and the Grand Chancellor, the Minister of Foreign Affairs. Despite his status as one of the most successful managers in history, Pep Guardiola has never received this honor. However, in 2010, the Manchester City boss was awarded the Royal Order of Sports Merit, which recognizes distinguished service in sports.

Arteta spent three years as Guardiola’s assistant coach at Manchester City from 2016 to 2019.

Upon receiving the order at the Spanish Embassy in London with his family, Arteta said: “I am both humbled and honored to receive The Royal Order of Isabella the Catholic. It is a truly wonderful moment to accept this award today at the Embassy of Spain in London, together with so many people who have been inspirational to me during my life. This prestigious award is dedicated to all the special people in my life who have shaped my journey so far, helping me through challenges and celebrating the successes together.”
