A 30-year-old man who climbed a 33 kV high-tension electricity pole in Mayo-Belwa, Adamawa, demanding the resignation of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been admitted to Yola Psychiatric Hospital for evaluation.
On the morning of September 27, Abdullahi Mohammed, from Taraba State, scaled the pole along the Yola-Jalingo highway, declaring he would not come down until the Nigerian President stepped down. He stayed atop the pole until the night of September 28, when local residents convinced him to descend. He was subsequently arrested by the police.
Police Public Relations Officer SP Suleiman Nguroje informed Arewa Punch that Mohammed is undergoing psychiatric assessment at a facility within the Yola Specialist Hospital.
“When officers from the Mayo-Belwa division rescued Abdullahi Mohammed, they found hard drugs, including green leaves he admitted were Indian hemp,” Nguroje explained.
He further added, “During questioning, Mohammed confessed to using Indian hemp and other substances. His erratic behavior led us to take him for psychiatric evaluation, and we are awaiting the results before proceeding with further actions.”
Nguroje also noted that Mohammed’s actions were suicidal, and under Nigerian law, attempting suicide is a criminal offense.
“Attempting to commit su!cide is a punishable offense under our Constitution, so we will be charging him in court,” he stated.
