Over 100 people are reported to have d!ed, and more than 50 were hospitalized after a fuel tanker crashed in Majiya village, located in the Taura local government area of Jigawa state, at around 12:30 am on Wednesday, October 16.
The explosion occurred when villagers attempted to collect fuel from the overturned tanker.
Confirming the incident, DSP Lawal Shiisu Adams, spokesperson for the state police command, explained: “On Wednesday, a petrol tanker traveling from Port Harcourt to Nguru in Yobe state lost control and overturned in Majiya village, Taura LGA, at approximately 12:30 am.
The spilled fuel entered village gutters and drains, and when residents started scooping it, the petrol ignited.
So far, 95 deaths have been confirmed, and 50 others are receiving treatment in the hospital.”
