Veteran actor Kanayo O. Kanayo recently shared his concerns on social media regarding the numerous police and military checkpoints along roads in the South East.
In an Instagram video posted this morning, he explained that while traveling along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway, he did not encounter any police or military checkpoints. However, in the South East, he observed that checkpoints appear every 200 meters, causing “harassment and humiliation” for travelers.
Kanayo questioned whether these checkpoints reflect “hatred or dislike” toward residents of the South East.
He shared that he departed from the Felele Olorunshogo area of Ibadan around 7:15 AM, reaching Lagos by 8:15 AM without seeing a single checkpoint over the 80-kilometer journey. In contrast, he noted a heavy presence of police and military checkpoints along the Onitsha-Enugu expressway.
He expressed frustration at the level of policing and militarization in the South East, describing how it delays journeys and subjects people to indignities, including being asked to exit vehicles with their hands up.
Kanayo questioned whether this treatment stems from a sense of animosity and asked if the South East is still regarded as part of Nigeria.
