A young woman is urging others to seek medical attention if they experience any symptoms, based on her own experience with a potentially fatal condition. Josimara Bassangue from Heywood began suffering from severe headaches and balance issues at the age of 20. Her GP initially thought it was an infection due to her high temperature and prescribed painkillers.
However, when the pain persisted, Josimara went to the hospital. Doctors first suspected meningitis, but further tests showed that half of her brain was covered in fluid, leading to a diagnosis of hydrocephalus. Since this condition can be life-threatening if untreated, it is essential to promptly check any unusual symptoms.
Hydrocephalus is a condition characterized by the buildup of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain, causing the ventricles to widen and exert harmful pressure on brain tissues. This pressure can lead to severe complications, including learning or physical disabilities, and in extreme cases, death. Treatment options include using an intracranial pressure monitor to measure skull pressure and a shunt to drain the excess fluid. Josimara underwent these procedures to manage her condition. Early intervention is crucial to prevent serious consequences of hydrocephalus.
Although there was hope that Josimara’s devices would last for years, her body has not responded well, leading to numerous complications. Since her first procedure in 2021, she has had to undergo eight surgeries, including four for ICP monitors and four for shunts. These surgeries have taken a significant physical toll on her, and the constant fear of device failure looms over her. This persistent worry has also affected her mental health, especially as a young person who should be looking forward to her future. Frequent hospital visits and brain surgeries have made it extremely challenging for her to live a normal life.
After her diagnosis, Josimara was in shock and struggled with its impact on her life. Despite the difficulties with the procedures, she remained dedicated to creating positive change. She launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise awareness about hydrocephalus and established the Josimara Neuro Foundation.
