How Bobrisky Allegedly Spent His Time in Kirikiri’s Special Cell

Nigerians have been sharing their thoughts on the experiences of popular cross-dresser Idris Okuneye, also known as Bobrisky, during his six-month jail term.

According to Punch, sources indicate that Bobrisky, assigned prison number S682/2024, was transferred to the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Kirikiri after his conviction on May 12, as his presence in the Ikoyi prison was attracting significant attention and media coverage.

A reliable source revealed, “He was initially moved to Ikoyi prison, where he spent a few days before the controller, Ben-Rabbi Freedman, transferred him to the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Kirikiri.”

Another source confirmed Bobrisky’s transfer from Ikoyi to Kirikiri, noting that he spent some time there before being moved again to the Maximum Security Custodial Centre in Kirikiri.

The source mentioned that Bobrisky received visits from several relatives in prison, with records kept of all his activities. “Many people visited him, including three family members. They followed the proper procedures to gain access. I also saw him in prison; he appeared gentle and subdued,” the source added.

Reports suggest that special cells are available for certain inmates deemed “Very Important Persons” who might be at risk if they were to mix with the general population.

“This area resembles a back cell or a single cell originally intended for well-behaved inmates, in accordance with prison regulations. Those with good behavior may be placed there as a reward. However, some inmates are brought in under special circumstances and are allowed to live more comfortably. Some even customize their spaces,” the source explained.

When asked about the cost associated with such accommodations, the source noted that fees are typically determined by the officer in charge of the centre.

“They charge significant amounts based on the type of inmate. When you witnessed the altercation between DSS operatives and the prison service regarding (Godwin) Emefiele at the court, what did you think was behind it? It’s due to the benefits that come with housing such individuals,” the source added.

It was suggested that Bobrisky might have been placed in a “special cell” during his time at Kirikiri. Another source confirmed that such arrangements are often negotiated between inmates and prison officials, indicating that the correctional service was aware of its intentions, leading to Bobrisky being shielded from other inmates upon his admission.

“Only a few inmates saw him at the medium prison before he was moved to the maximum facility. It was all orchestrated,” the source claimed.

However, when contacted, Abubakar Umar, spokesperson for the Nigerian Correctional Service, denied any claims of preferential treatment for VIP convicts.

“We are not aware of such arrangements. They are foreign to us. Nonetheless, we will investigate the information. All inmates receive the same treatment; we do not offer preferential treatment to anyone,” he insisted.

The Federal Government has initiated an investigation following the emergence of a purported audio clip in which Bobrisky allegedly claims that his godfather secured him special accommodations during his incarceration.
