  • A Dutch court has sentenced former Ajax star Quincy Promes to six years in jail.
  • Promes was convicted for his role in smuggling two shipments of coc@!ne in 2020.

Former Ajax star Quincy Promes has been sentenced to six years in prison for his involvement in smuggling over 1,350 kilos of coc@!ne. Promes, charged last May for his alleged role in the smuggl!ng operation, was found guilty by the Public Prosecution Service of importing, exporting, transporting, and possessing the dr*gs. The coc@!ne, hidden in a shipment of sea salt from Brazil, was intercepted in Antwerp in January 2020, arriving in two containers weighing 650kg and 713kg each. Despite being a key suspect, Promes failed to appear at trial and did not provide a statement regarding the charges against him, as reported by NOS.

According to NL Times, prosecutors remarked that he appears to believe he is beyond reach, whether in Russia or abroad. They also questioned how a successful footballer like him allowed himself to get deeply involved in crim!nal activities. Initially, Dutch officials sought a nine-year prison term for the Spartak Moscow forward when the case emerged last month.

Prosecutors argued for the lengthy sentence, alleging that Promes glamorized the coca!ne trade and had the financial means to invest, positioning him higher on the crim!nal hierarchy. The investigation began after authorities received information about Promes’ involvement in the coca!ne trade. Surveillance and monitoring of conversations revealed his alleged role in importing, exporting, and selling dr*gs.

Earlier, in June, Promes received an 18-month prison sentence for st@bbing his cousin during a family dispute over a stolen necklace at a warehouse in Abcoude. The incident occurred while he was playing for Ajax in the Netherlands, before moving to Spartak Moscow in February 2021.

Similar to his recent charges, Promes faced criticism from the judge for his absence in court to defend himself or show any remorse. Had he done so, his sentence would have been reduced by six months. Additionally, he was ordered to pay €7,000 [£5,973] in compensation to the victim.

The Amsterdam-born forward represented the Dutch national team 50 times, netting seven goals.

Commencing his career at Twente, he then embarked on a four-year spell with Spartak from 2014 to 2018, before transferring to Spanish club Sevilla.

Following his time at Sevilla, he spent a season-and-a-half with Ajax before returning to Spartak.
