As the colder months approach, many people start bundling up in bed—socks included. The debate over whether to wear socks to bed has been ongoing, with some swearing by the added warmth and others finding it uncomfortable. If you’re someone who loves cozy feet at night, this is for you.
However, if you’re tempted to wear the same socks from day to night because your laundry basket is overflowing, experts advise against it. A study by Mattress Next Day revealed that worn socks can harbor concerning bacteria, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a type also associated with cockroaches. Not exactly what you’d want in bed.
The study surveyed 1,000 people, revealing that while 18 percent admitted to wearing socks in bed, only 30 percent changed into a fresh pair at night, according to House Beautiful.
This topic was discussed on the “Calm Down With Erin and Charissa” podcast, where the hosts were grossed out by the findings. They labeled the habit “disgusting” and questioned why anyone would wear socks to bed. The conversation sparked a lively debate, with some defending the practice and others expressing strong opposition.
One listener remarked, “I’m shocked so many people don’t understand winter life in colder climates. Who DOESN’T wear socks to bed in northern latitudes?” On the flip side, another commented, “Wearing socks to bed seems like the most uncomfortable thing imaginable.” A third simply asked, “Who even wears socks to bed?”
While experts advise against wearing dirty socks to bed, clean socks aren’t necessarily a problem. Dr. Anna Chacon, a Miami-based board-certified dermatologist, told House Beautiful, “Wearing socks around the house and then getting into bed is generally not a health concern. It can provide comfort and warmth. However, if your socks are dirty or sweaty, it’s best to change into a clean pair before bed for good hygiene.”
Even if your socks haven’t touched the floor, they can still accumulate dirt and bacteria from your shoes, especially if your feet tend to sweat, warns Carlie Gasia, a certified wellness coach at Sleep Advisor. So, if you’re a fan of wearing socks to bed, just make sure they’re fresh.
