At least eight people have been k!lled in an inter-cult clash between the Awarra and Ochia communities in the Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area of Imo State.
A community leader, speaking anonymously to Punch on Thursday, September 26, 2024, expressed frustration over the state government’s failure to provide adequate security against the ongoing v!olence. “So far, eight individuals have died in this clash. Of those, five were cult members, while three community members collapsed and died upon hearing g*nfire. One person who was abducted is still missing,” he reported.
He urged the Nigeria Police and the Imo State Government to step in and facilitate the return of those who fled their homes out of fear. “Our people are displaced and taking refuge in churches in neighboring communities like Assa, Obile, Obosima, and Umuokanne, and they’re suffering due to lack of food and access to their homes and farmlands. It’s heartbreaking to see people living outside their homes during these tough economic times.”
To restore peace, the Awarra and Ochia communities have formed a committee aimed at developing strategies to bring stability back to the area. The community leader expressed hope that the committee would succeed in fostering lasting peace.
“We need peace to return so that our people can resume their normal lives,” he added.
A youth leader, who requested anonymity due to security concerns, explained that the conflict stems from a power struggle between rival groups over control of proceeds from oil companies operating in the area. “This is a battle between two factions, one led by a man known as Acid and the other by Achis, who are vying for control of the financial benefits from the oil companies,” he noted.
While confirming that at least four people had been killed in the clashes, he mentioned that normalcy had been restored following government intervention.
Henry Okoye, spokesperson for the State Police Command, confirmed the incidents and acknowledged ongoing complaints about attacks by criminal elements in the region. “The police are actively working to restore peace in Ohaji. The Commissioner of Police has held several meetings with local stakeholders, and we’ve enhanced our security strategies in collaboration with other agencies,” he stated.
“The security of Ohaji also depends on the cooperation of the local population. The Commissioner has personally visited the area, and our collaborative efforts are yielding results, including multiple arrests. The security situation in Ohaji has improved since the current police chief took office, and we are committed to restoring peace and order.”
