Court Approves Lawsuit to Force Government Investigation into Former Zamfara Governor Bello Matawalle for Band!try Allegations

The Federal High Court in Abuja has granted approval for a lawsuit aimed at compelling the Federal Government to investigate the alleged ties between Minister of State for Defence Alhaji Bello Matawalle and bandit activities in Zamfara State.

The suit, initiated by human rights activist Abubakar Dahiru from Zamfara, names President Bola Tinubu, the Attorney General of the Federation, and the Inspector General of Police as the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd defendants, respectively.

Through his lawyer, Mr. Ojonimi Apeh, Dahiru is requesting that the court declare that President Tinubu should instruct the Inspector General of Police to investigate the banditry and kidnapping crisis in Zamfara, particularly regarding Matawalle’s alleged involvement. The case, designated FHC/ABJ/CS/1434/2024, aims to enhance public safety in the region.

Dahiru is also seeking a court order requiring President Tinubu to direct the IGP to thoroughly examine allegations against Matawalle, which include claims of sponsoring bandits, providing vehicles for their use, and obstructing law enforcement efforts.

The plaintiff highlighted several allegations, referencing statements from Zamfara Governor Dauda Lawal and various media reports that accuse Matawalle of being directly involved in banditry during his governorship from 2019 to 2023. He noted that the ongoing banditry and kidnapping have resulted in significant suffering in Zamfara, including loss of life, displacement of thousands, and widespread economic distress.

Despite the serious nature of these allegations, Dahiru contended that no governmental action has been taken to investigate Matawalle. He urged the court to mandate an official inquiry to uncover the truth behind these claims.

The court has yet to schedule a date for the hearing of the case.
