Originally opened in 1935, this nearly 90-year-old lido has experienced several restorations and periods of neglect over the years.

Now a Grade II listed site, the lido has been restored to its former glory, providing a summer retreat for swimmers. It is set to welcome visitors for the 2024 summer season starting this weekend, with the season running from May 25 to September 15.

Visitors can also enjoy the sea views from the adjacent sun deck, a popular spot for sunbathing in Plymouth, without swimming.

Plymouth Active has praised the lido’s qualities, noting that it has frequently been recognized as one of Europe’s best.

Their statement highlighted: “With a prime view of Plymouth’s magnificent seafront, Tinside Lido regularly features in the top 10 of Europe’s outdoor pools.”

In addition to the swimming area, the complex features a sun deck, which is widely considered the best spot for sunbathing in Plymouth.

The pool’s visual appeal comes from its art-deco design, reminiscent of a cruise ship. Architect John Wibberley envisioned this design, drawing inspiration from maritime vessels. Atlas Obscura describes it as: “A Grade II listed structure of historical significance, situated along the city’s border with the English Channel.

“It showcases quintessential Art-Deco architecture, marked by smooth lines, rounded contours, and a striking white exterior.”

The lido’s design pays tribute to the ‘ocean liner aesthetic’ popular at the time, reflecting the trend of building lidos in British coastal towns during the 1930s to cater to the growing interest in sports and wellness.

Both locals and tourists have praised the lido, which holds an impressive 4.5/5 rating on Google based on numerous reviews. A local resident commented, “As someone who lives in Plymouth, it’s easy to forget how lucky we are to have the lido so nearby.”

One visitor remarked, “It’s a delight to spend time at this historic and beautiful lido on a sunny day.” Another shared, “It’s the finest lido in the South West, with friendly staff and a great atmosphere for family fun. It’s definitely a must-visit during the summer.”

The lido is set to open this coming weekend, though online reservations are already available.
