Apple’s groundbreaking update brings Messages via Satellite, allowing text messaging without a cellular network.
Building on Apple’s current Emergency SOS via Satellite service, which connects users to emergency services via satellites, the new feature will be included in iOS 18. It will enable you to send texts through the Messages app even when you’re off the grid.
Announced by Apple’s Ronak Shah at the WWDC event, this innovation guarantees connectivity without Wi-Fi or cell service.
Leveraging the same advanced technology as Emergency SOS via satellite, Apple introduces Messages via satellite.
This feature allows iPhone 14 users to connect to satellites high above the Earth to send texts through the Messages app, even without cellular coverage.
There is no limit on the number of texts you can send, and it supports both iMessage and standard SMS texts.
Additionally, iMessage texts sent via satellite will retain end-to-end encryption, though there are some limitations.
You can only send text messages, emojis, and Tapback reactions, not photos or videos. This feature will be available exclusively on iPhone models running iOS 18, which is expected to be released in the fall, likely around mid-September.
Moreover, only the following iPhone models will support Messages via Satellite:
- iPhone 14
- iPhone 14 Plus
- iPhone 14 Pro
- iPhone 14 Pro Max
- iPhone 15
- iPhone 15 Plus
- iPhone 15 Pro
- iPhone 15 Pro Max
If Apple releases an iPhone 16 this year, it is anticipated to feature Messages via Satellite as well.
This service is offered free for two years with the purchase of a new iPhone, but the cost after this period is currently unknown. Apple might extend the free period, though no official announcement has been made.
