The Super Eagles of Nigeria secured a victory over the Cheetahs of Benin Republic in their opening match of the Africa Cup of Nations qualifying series at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo.
This win was particularly notable as Benin had previously defeated Nigeria earlier in the year during World Cup qualifying under the guidance of former Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr.
Nigeria’s caretaker manager, Austin Eguavoen, chose a striking trio of Ademola Lookman, Boniface, and Chukwueze, while star player Victor Osimhen was left on the bench. Veteran captain William Troost-Ekong led the defense, joined by Ola Aina, Basset, and San Ajayi.
Ademola Lookman scored the opening goal in the first half with a skillful counterattack just before halftime, maneuvering past three defenders and finishing beyond the goalkeeper’s reach.
As the Super Eagles ramped up the tempo at Uyo Stadium after halftime, the crowd erupted in cheers when Victor Osimhen was introduced with 30 minutes left to play.
Shortly after his arrival, Osimhen extended Nigeria’s lead with a spectacular goal.
Lookman’s third goal secured the victory for Nigeria, placing them in a strong position within the qualifying group.
