Actress Halima Abubakar has initiated legal proceedings against Emeka Rollas, the National President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), demanding N30 billion in damages. This follows her recent indefinite suspension from the guild.
The AGN stated that Halima’s suspension was due to allegations that she spread defamatory rumors about members of the guild, particularly regarding extramarital affairs involving high-profile individuals in the entertainment industry. In response, Halima’s legal team, P.D Pius & Associates, expressed shock over the accusations, highlighting that she was not given an opportunity to respond before her suspension was made public on social media.
In a letter dated October 20, 2024, her lawyers accused the AGN President of intentionally tarnishing her reputation, claiming the allegations were meant to defame her and incite public disapproval.
The letter stated:
“Our client has been facing serious health challenges for years, and despite continuing to act professionally, you chose to spread this false narrative during her recovery. This has caused her immense emotional and psychological distress and harmed her reputation in society.”
The solicitors demanded that the defamatory statements be retracted immediately and that an unconditional public apology be posted on Rollas’ Instagram account within seven days. Additionally, they sought N30 billion as compensation for the damage done to her reputation.
Halima’s legal team warned that if these conditions are not met within seven days, they will take the matter to court.
