Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface voiced his frustration on X on Monday, October 14, about the poor treatment he and his teammates experienced in Libya. He expressed disappointment with how the Libyan authorities handled their situation.
Boniface posted: “Been at the airport for almost 13 hours, no food, no wifi, nowhere to sleep. Africa, we can do better @caf.” He also called on the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to intervene in the delay.
On Sunday, October 13, Libyan officials acted on their threat to mistreat the Super Eagles and the Nigerian delegation ahead of their return qualifying match in Benina. The plane meant to take the Nigerian team to Benghazi was redirected to another city, forcing the players to remain at Al Abraq airport for several hours.
They were held in the airport’s arrival hall, unable to leave. A video released on Sunday showed Nigerian players and officials trying to resolve the situation in Libya.
The Super Eagles are scheduled to play against the Mediterranean Knights at a 10,000-capacity stadium in Benina, 19 kilometers from Benghazi, on Tuesday, October 15, 2024.
