On a frigid Wisconsin night, bus driver Natalie Barnes sensed an added chill in the air. Spotting a familiar face, she couldn’t shake the feeling that something was amiss. In response, Barnes offered to buy him a hot meal and invited him to warm up on the bus for the remainder of her shift.
While this act alone is heartening, Barnes didn’t stop there. Going above and beyond, she reached out to a friend who, in turn, contacted ‘Community Advocates.’ This organization is actively working to secure shelter for Richard and is engaged in the search for a long-term home for him.
For Barnes, the combination of Richard’s advanced age and the bitter cold made her actions driven by both conscience and kindness. She expressed the importance of ensuring he had a warm place to stay for the night, at the very least.
Little did she realize, things were about to take a heartwarming turn for her as well.

In recognition of her generous spirit, Barnes was bestowed with the MTS Excellence Award by the Milwaukee County Transit System (MCTS).
Established to spotlight acts of kindness, the MCTS Excellence Award, according to MCTS County Executive Chris Abele, perfectly encapsulated Barnes’s deserving recognition. During the ceremony, Abele expressed gratitude for Natalie’s actions, emphasizing the importance of mutual care and collaboration in combating homelessness.
Barnes shared that she and Richard have developed a friendship, staying connected through a phone route during off-hours. “He thanks me every time he talks to me for helping him,” she said, noting that he affectionately refers to her as his “little guardian angel.” Barnes is pleased to report that he is making positive progress.

Richard had an even more profound reason to express gratitude toward Barnes that night. Reflecting on that night, Barnes shared that her motivation is straightforward, be it in rain, sleet, or snow. “At some point in our lives, everybody needs help,” she said. “I wanted to do what I could to help Richard in some way.”
