Vincent Dransfield Refuses to Let Age Limit Him.
At the remarkable age of 109, he continues to independently navigate the town, humorously remarking that he not only drives himself but also “drives people crazy.”
Residing independently in Little Falls, New Jersey, he’s called it home since 1945. According to his family, he requires no assistance maneuvering throughout his residence, easily transitioning between its various levels, and confidently managing everyday chores like laundry.
In a remarkable twist, Dransfield holds the distinction of being the most senior firefighter at the Little Falls Volunteer Fire Department. While he may not be as active as in his younger years, he remains a valued member of the roster at Singac Engine Company No. 3, an astounding tenure spanning over 80 years. At one point, he even served as the department’s chief.
Even at the remarkable age of 109, Dransfield’s quick wit and humor remain undiminished. When asked about how he feels at this age, he quips, “How do I feel? Let’s go out to dance somewhere. How about that? That’s how I feel.”
Not only is his humor intact, but he has also maintained exceptional physical well-being, leaving those who know him in awe. Erica Lista, one of Dransfield’s seven great-grandchildren, expresses amazement, stating, “He doesn’t get back aches. He doesn’t experience the daily aches and pains that I, at 48, get. He doesn’t get headaches, anything like that. It’s incredible.”
Wisdom from an Elder
Dransfield graciously imparted some valuable advice for not just achieving a long life, but a meaningful one. When questioned about the source of his happiness and vitality, he attributes it to his involvement with the fire department, explaining, “I met so many friends.”
His granddaughter observes that the fire department crew essentially became his family, a profound source of support following the loss of his wife. Dransfield consistently places a premium on pursuing his passions and acknowledges that his enduring presence is partly due to the tight-knit community surrounding him. He also humorously attributes another unexpected factor to his longevity – milk.
Vincent Dransfield’s Early Years
Dransfield concluded his formal education after the 8th grade and, at the tender age of 15, embarked on a journey to aid his family by working on a dairy farm. For five years, he diligently delivered milk, and he availed himself of this nutritious beverage constantly. He firmly believes that this practice enhanced his well-being, especially during the challenging era of the Great Depression in the 1930s when food was in short supply.
Despite this, it appears that Dransfield hasn’t been overly preoccupied with his dietary choices over the years. While he’s generally refrained from alcohol, except for an occasional beer, he has typically indulged in his preferred foods and hasn’t meticulously monitored his weight.
Vincent Dransfield maintained an active lifestyle throughout his long life, although he finds the notion of casual jogging quite amusing, often asking, “Where are they running to?” Yet, perhaps his most significant advice is to maintain a positive outlook. Dransfield considers himself an optimist and is renowned in his community for his cheerful demeanor. He takes the time to know everyone’s name and actively engages in his local community.
Vincent Dransfield, the patriarch of a growing family, serves as a source of inspiration for his grandchildren. His great-grandson, Matthew Lista, finds it incredibly enjoyable to hear his jokes and stories, often recounting memories from as far back as when Dransfield was 30. The ability to recall these stories from decades ago is truly remarkable and cherished by his family.
Vincent Dransfield’s vibrant spirit and remarkable life serve as a reminder of the enduring power of the human spirit. His story reinforces the significance of positive thinking, staying active, and the strength of a supportive community. In a world that often prioritizes youth, Dransfield’s journey underscores that age should never hinder us from leading fulfilling lives. His optimistic outlook, dedication to his community, and zest for life are qualities we can all strive for, regardless of our age.
