With no alternatives left, Miriam Rodríguez summoned the courage to request a meeting with a cartel member. To her astonishment, one agreed to meet. Although he professed ignorance about Karen’s whereabouts, he offered to assist in her search for a sum of $2,000. Rodríguez paid the fee, although it ultimately proved fruitless. However, during this encounter, she managed to ascertain the young man’s name: Sama.
Armed with this crucial information, Rodríguez had obtained her initial lead. She confided in her surviving daughter, expressing her belief that Karen had tragically lost her life. The 57-year-old, who had recently broken her foot while chasing a suspect and was using crutches, was making her way towards her front door when a white Nissan, driven by the escaped inmates, pulled up in front of her house. They opened fire on Rodríguez, firing about a dozen rounds, before swiftly departing. Her husband discovered her in their driveway, her hand still reaching for her purse, which contained her pistol.
The tragic death of Miriam Rodríguez elicited a wave of outrage throughout the state. Governor Francisco Javier García Cabeza de Vaca expressed his sentiments on Twitter, declaring, “The government of Tamaulipas will not allow the death of Miriam Rodríguez to turn into yet another statistic. #NoToImpunity.
While the government did manage to apprehend two of Rodríguez’s assailants, with a third meeting his end in a gunfight, her m*rder had a profound impact on her life’s work.
