Sad News; Football Defender D!es at Age 27 After Collapse on Football Pitch

Nacional defender Juan Izquierdo has tragically passed away after collapsing on the pitch earlier this month due to an irregular heartbeat during a Copa Libertadores match. The 27-year-old Uruguayan had been receiving hospital treatment since collapsing during Nacional’s game against Sao Paulo on August 22.

In a heartfelt statement on X, Club Nacional shared, “It is with the deepest sorrow and shock in our hearts that we announce the death of our beloved player Juan Izquierdo. We extend our sincerest condolences to his family, friends, teammates, and loved ones. All of Nacional is in mourning for this irreparable loss.”

A spokesperson for the Brazilian team Sao Paulo called it a “sad day for football.” Inter Miami striker Luis Suarez also expressed his sorrow, saying, “Pain, sadness, it is hard to explain. May he rest in peace. I wish a lot of strength for his family and friends.”

Izquierdo had been on a ventilator since Sunday and was under neurological care starting Monday. He collapsed in the 84th minute of the match, having come on as a half-time substitute for former Liverpool defender Sebastian Coates. Importantly, he was not in contact with any other player when he collapsed. After receiving immediate medical attention on the pitch, he was quickly taken to an intensive care unit.

Following Izquierdo’s tragic incident, Uruguay’s first and second division leagues postponed their weekend matches in his honor.
