Next season, Dutchman Arne Slot will take charge at Liverpool, and the team has already undergone significant changes in preparation for the 2024/25 season. The club has officially announced the departure of 10 players, including fan favorites Joel Matip and Thiago Alcantara. Their departures were revealed last month as their contracts were nearing their end. After the season’s final victory over Wolves, which was also Jurgen Klopp’s last match as manager, Matip and Thiago had the opportunity to bid heartfelt farewells.
Liverpool FC has announced additional departures, confirming that several promising academy players will also be leaving the club. Among those departing are Adam Lewis and Melkamu Frauendorf, both of whom made their first-team debuts under Klopp.
Mateusz Musialowski, who featured in the match against Sparta Prague this season, is also set to leave. Additionally, Nathan Giblin, Francis Gyimah, Luke Hewitson, Niall Osborne, and Cody Pennington will be departing from Anfield. The club expressed its gratitude in a statement: “Liverpool FC extends its heartfelt thanks to Joel, Thiago, Adam, Melkamu, Mateusz, Nathan, Francis, Luke, Niall, and Cody for their contributions and wishes them the very best in their future endeavors.”
Amidst numerous player departures, Liverpool is actively working on securing new contracts for key players. Spanish goalkeeper Adrian has been offered a new contract to stay with the team. Additionally, discussions are in progress to extend the contracts of academy goalkeepers Jacob Poytress and Reece Trueman at Anfield. The club is now shifting its focus to the upcoming summer transfer activities.
With the departures of Matip and Thiago, Liverpool will be seeking suitable replacements. Cameroonian defender Matip shared his thoughts, stating, “My eight years at Liverpool have been remarkable. I had the privilege of being part of an exciting journey with an exceptional coach and team, within an extraordinary club. We’ve won significant titles and enjoyed the support of the world’s best fans. I am deeply thankful for the incredible moments shared with the dedicated people around the club and the passionate Liverpool FC fans.”
Joel Matip expressed his gratitude, saying, “From the very beginning, my family and I have felt welcomed and supported. Our time here has been wonderful, and it will always be fondly remembered.”
Matip’s final season at Liverpool was plagued by a severe knee injury, resulting in significant absences. The defender, who has played over 200 matches for the club, faced a challenging term. Similarly, Thiago’s contributions were limited due to ongoing health issues.
