A doctor has shared her reasons for avoiding five specific foods due to potential health risks. Dr. Jessica Kiss, also known as “Ask Dr Mom” on TikTok, posted a video detailing the “five things” she avoids eating, explaining that while her last item may sound “strange,” it’s “very important.”
1. Reheated rice:
Dr. Kiss cautions against reheating leftover rice, as leaving boiled rice at room temperature can promote the growth of harmful bacteria. This bacteria can form “spores,” which may become “reactivated” if not thoroughly reheated, posing a health risk. While reheating in a rice cooker is generally safe, rice left at room temperature should be avoided.
2. Picnic food:
With foods left out in the open, particularly at picnics, Dr. Kiss advises caution due to the “high risk of foodborne illness.” Her recommendation: “either eat immediately or wait until later.”
3. Artificially colored foods:
Although not a strict rule, Dr. Kiss avoids foods with unnatural coloring, noting concerns about their impact on the body and humorously adding that she’d prefer not to “poop neon.”
4. Food from a dented can:
Dented cans pose a risk of botulism, Dr. Kiss explains, as a sharp dent may break the can’s seal, allowing bacteria to enter. She highlights that the CDC considers botulism a severe, potentially life-threatening illness.
5. Grapefruit:
Lastly, Dr. Kiss avoids grapefruit because it can interfere with the body’s processing of certain medications. She advises consulting with a doctor to confirm whether grapefruit is safe based on individual medications.
