Imagine the excitement of winning the lottery—the thrill of realizing you’ve landed a life-changing sum. While most of us can only dream of it, George Mounsey got to experience it firsthand. However, after initially believing he’d won £1 million in the Postcode Lottery, he soon discovered the prize wasn’t solely his.
Living in Breaston, Derbyshire, George was thrilled when he thought his postcode had hit the jackpot. In his excitement, he rushed to share the news with his neighbors, Paul Rowland and Alison Browne. However, as is customary with the UK’s Postcode Lottery, the £1 million prize was shared among all participants in that postcode.
Along with Paul White, who lives in a nearby bungalow, and another neighbor who preferred to stay anonymous, George’s share came to £200,000. While it wasn’t the full £1 million he’d initially thought, it was still a considerable prize.
George, who lives with his longtime partner, Margaret Blurton, expressed his surprise: “We couldn’t believe it when all three houses won together. We had no idea they were playing too until we knocked on their door and asked, ‘Are you in the Postcode Lottery? Did you get a call?’”
Reflecting on the win, George said, “I thought maybe it would be £30,000. This is unbelievable.”
The couple is still deciding how to spend their winnings. George remarked, “We don’t really know what we’ll do yet. We’re comfortable financially. Margaret is interested in a static caravan in Yorkshire. We’ll see; maybe we’ll invest.”
Having already traveled widely and with two Schnauzers at home, long trips like world cruises are off the table. Margaret hinted, “The family will get nicer Christmas presents this year,” and George joked, “We might even spring for a bigger turkey!”
