Delta State Government Threatens Legal Action Against Doctors Offering Family Planning to M!nors

The Delta State Government has issued a warning to medical personnel against providing family planning services to underage girls, stating that those who do so may face prosecution.

The warning was delivered by the State Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General, Ohwovoriole Ekemejero SAN, during World Contraception Day festivities in Asaba, the state capital.

Represented by Mrs. Patricia Akanagwuna, Director of the Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Unit, Ohwovoriole emphasized that offering such services to minors without parental or guardian consent is illegal, and those involved will be held accountable under the law.

“In legal terms, any medical doctor who provides family planning to minors will be prosecuted. The law requires that consent from parents or guardians must be obtained,” he stated.

He also encouraged medical professionals to ensure that women can make informed choices regarding their reproductive health, free from coercion and judgment, while safeguarding their right to confidentiality when seeking contraceptive services.

Dr. Joseph Onojaeme, the Commissioner for Health, highlighted that the family planning town hall meeting held on World Contraception Day aimed to raise awareness about individuals’ rights to make personal choices.

He urged women to consider family planning for their own benefit.

Additionally, Dr. Paul U., Executive Director of the State Primary Health Development Agency, called on stakeholders, including local government chairmen, to provide funding and support for family planning initiatives.
