The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has ordered an immediate investigation into bribery allegations reportedly made against some Commission officers by Idris Okuneye, also known as Bobrisky. These claims surfaced in a viral audio released on September 24 by social activist Very Dark Man.
In the audio, Bobrisky allegedly stated in a phone call that he paid N15,000,000 (Fifteen Million Naira) to unnamed officials of the EFCC to have money laundering charges against him dropped.
It’s worth noting that the EFCC filed six charges against Bobrisky in April related to Naira abuse and money laundering. While four charges were for Naira abuse, two were for money laundering. However, when he appeared in court, the money laundering charges were dropped, and he was arraigned on four counts related to Naira abuse. He was subsequently sentenced to six months in jail on April 12 after being found guilty.
In the alleged audio conversation, Bobrisky also claimed he was kept in a private apartment near the correctional facility after a so-called “Godfather” intervened with the Nigeria Prisons Service to prevent him from serving his court-mandated sentence.
In response to these allegations against its operatives, EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale issued a statement confirming that a team of investigators has been formed to examine the claims.
“The Commission invites both Okuneye and Otse to report to its Lagos Directorate to assist investigators in uncovering the alleged bribery,” the statement read.
The EFCC assures the public that these allegations will be thoroughly investigated, and the findings will be made public. The Commission remains committed to its core values of integrity, courage, professionalism, and collaboration at all times.
