“An Emotional Mother’s Day Reunion for a Mom Who Woke Up From a 5-year Coma: ‘What a Blessing'”

Upon awakening from a five-year coma in August 2022, Jennifer Flewellen’s son, Daeton, overjoyed by her recovery, invited her to his church for Mother’s Day last month. This marked Flewellen’s first Mother’s Day celebration at home with her children post-coma.

To her surprise, during the church service, Daeton, aged 20, delivered an emotional poem he had penned in her honor before the congregation.

Excerpts from the poem include, “Regardless of distance, time, or life’s journey that may separate us, my heart will always echo these three words: I cherish you.”

On September 25, 2017, following the morning routine of dropping her sons at school, Flewellen experienced a devastating single-car crash. Throughout the challenging years of her coma, her mother, Peggy Means, stood by her side with unwavering faith in her recovery, defying the doctors’ pessimistic predictions. After awakening, Flewellen’s initial communication was limited to nods, but she has since made remarkable progress in her strength and recovery.

Last fall, Flewellen went to her youngest son Julian’s high school football game and joined Daeton and his grandmother for Mother’s Day church service. Peggy Means mentioned that the preacher recognized Flewellen’s presence as a blessing they had been praying for. After church, the family gathered at Means’s house where Flewellen’s eldest son Skylar lives. Means expressed gratitude for the community’s support and the GoFundMe contributions that helped them purchase a van for outings and transportation to Flewellen’s therapy sessions.

Flewellen recently underwent a procedure to relax the tendon in her hand, which had stiffened from years of inactivity. She has come to terms with her sons growing up and her husband moving on, now finding joy in spending time with her granddaughter Nyla Ann and supporting her youngest son as he prepares to attend college on a football scholarship. Flewellen is looking forward to celebrating her 42nd birthday with her family on May 19, cherishing every moment with her active sons.
